Required Summer Reading and Assignment
Choose THREE of the Following Titles-
- A Step from Heaven by An Na
- The Pearl by John Steinbeck
- House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros (suggested for future AP track)
- The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (suggested for future AP track)
- Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway (suggested for future AP track)
Assignment-
The theme of study for 10th grade English is “Connecting with Culture.”
Culture: The sum total of ways of living including shared values, ideas, beliefs, and behavior built up by a group of human beings. Culture is transmitted over time from one generation to another and can be used as a way of excluding individuals that do not have the same common experiences.
Each of these novels deals in part with the main character’s experiences with culture.
For each novel that you select, create a list of ten quotes that reflect how the character experiences culture in the novel. For each quote, also include the page number and a detailed explanation of how the quote relates to cultural experiences. Your list of quotes should be typed or neatly hand-written.
Assignment is due at the end of the first week of school.
